About El Comité

The primary objective of New Labor is to build a self-governing, advocacy organization that enables mobile workers to represent and leverage their interests in both the workplace and community. New Labor has a fluid leadership structure that reflects a desire to give everyone a voice and to offer leadership opportunities to as many members as possible.

Similar to a town hall meeting, participation in New Labor's monthly governing council, El Comité is open to all members. Decision-making is consensual; issues are discussed until there is general agreement on a course of action. Leadership for specific projects and activities is assumed by members willing and able to volunteer for the job. Virtually every decision handled by the organization is made through El Comité: setting dues and rates for other services, class offerings and schedules, trips, activities and other organizational functions. Over the past few years, El Comité has conducted all outreach and recruitment activities and worked with staff to develop plans for new initiatives. This fluid structure accommodates the needs of a mobile workforce and ensures maximum accountability of New Labor's staff to its membership. Monthly Comité meetings usually draw between 35-45 people.

The New Labor Comité has meetings on the second Tuesday in New Brunswick and third wednesday in Lakewood of each month. The meetings are open to all members and consists of five segments:

1. Description of El Comité

2. Reports (ex. Financial, Leadership, Movilization)

3. Topics for Discussion: Usually one or two topics, which are current issues, problems or upcoming activities, that are discussed and decided upon by consensus. The decisions of the Sunday meeting are included in materials given to the Tuesday meeting.

4. New Business: The group discusses issues and/or decides on the topic(s) for next meeting.

5. Announcements

The Next Comité meetings are Tuesday, November 10 at 6:00 PM and Wednesday November 18 at 6:00 PM.
